From designer spats to celebrity sprogs, we take a look back at the stories that rocked our 2012.

1. The Year of the spat

In the fashion world, 2012 will surely be remembered as the year of the spat. Hedi Slimane certainly made sure his inaugural year at the head of YSL was an interesting one. Whether he was swatting away comparisons with the new creative director at Dior, Raf Simons or settling his beef with journalist Cathy Horyn, 2012 certainly was an exciting one for him. While there was an exchange of words at YSL, over at Zac Posen, things were gearing up a notch. Allegedly unhappy with their seating, Jalouse editor Jennifer Eymere slapped Posen PR Lynn Tesoro round the face. Apparantely following the slap with the now famous quote ‘Now you don’t mess with the French,’ Tesoro should learn not to mess with the Americans as she has subsequently been slapped with a $1 million lawsuit.

2. The hour of the men

Looking back on it, 2012 really was the year of the boys. With an ever-increasing rise in popularity and dominance of mens fashion, June saw the very first London Collections – a week dedicated to mens fashion.

3. Sporting Style

Being the host city for this year’s Olympic Games, only the best would do for the home team. Enter Stella McCartney to design the GB team official outfits. But the love affair with our sporting heros didn’t stop there, after team GB’s gold rush, every British designer worth their fashion grain clambered to have the sports stars dressed in their duds.

4. New Direction

No, we don’t mean the band, we mean creative direction. In a year that saw Raf Simons take over at Dior, Hedi Slimane take over at YSL, Alexander Wang’s move to Balenciaga and JW Anderson collaborate at Versus, the fashion world really was playing musical chairs.

5. Splits and Sprogs

No annual round-up is complete without a look at the the celebrity circle of life. A bumper year for celebrity births, the likes of Beyonce, Gisele, Sienna and Drew Barrymore welcomed little ones to the world, whilst on the other side of the tracks, Heidi and Seal, Tom and Katie and Vanessa and Johnny all called it quits.
